Carnival planned for SIU families with children

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- “Finding Grey Dawg” is the theme for Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Family Carnival, a fun afternoon created especially for SIU families with children.

This year’s free event is set for 3 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 27 in the Student Recreation Center’s West Gymnasium.

Arts, crafts, games, snacks and more await SIU students, faculty and staff families with children. At dozens of resource tables, families can learn about the numerous resources available for them at SIU and in the region, and they will receive clues to help them find the elusive Grey Dawg. When they piece the clues together and locate SIU’s mascot, they will win a special surprise.

Along the way, participants will discover the wide variety of academic supports, recreational and leisure opportunities, health resources and other types of assistance and resources available to area families within the university as well as in the surrounding community. Parents can also get acquainted with each other and socialize and network as the children play together. All children attending must be accompanied by an adult.

The Family Carnival is a collaborative event involving numerous campus units and departments along with community organizations.
