Media Advisory – Move-in 2016

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is welcoming new and returning students to campus this week in preparation for the fall semester that begins Aug. 22.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, new students who will reside in a Living Learning Community will move into campus residence halls. The rest of the new students will move in on Friday, Aug. 19.

During move-in, the process typically begins with students and their families dropping off the student’s belongings within designated areas near each residence hall. Volunteers will assist in moving the student’s belongings in. Students who will reside in the towers, located on the east side of campus, will receive a number when they arrive to alleviate congestion. When the number is called, move-in volunteers will help students move their possessions into their rooms.

Hundreds of volunteers from campus and the surrounding community have registered to welcome students to campus and help with move-in. Students residing in University Housing as well as their families and the registered volunteer helpers can enjoy a free welcome lunch in the dining halls on Thursday and Friday. Registered volunteers will receive a complimentary meal ticket when they check in for their move-in shift. Anyone else may eat in the dining halls by purchasing a guest meal ticket at the dining hall entrance.

Also this week, the university will hold a ceremony welcoming international students. “World of Welcome” is set for 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Student Recreation Center, and speakers will include Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell. SIU enrolls students from more than 100 countries.
