‘Rock of Ages’ ready to take the McLeod stage

by Vincent Rhomberg

McLeod Summer Playhouse rocks the roof with the Broadway musical hit, “Rock of Ages,” June 17-26.

Fashioned around chart-topping rock hits of the 1980s, the musical gives a humorous wink at head-banging, mullet haircuts and all things “glam” in this story of a wanna-be rock-n-roller and an aspiring actress searching for love and fame on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. The musical includes two dozen songs from such 1980s staples as Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, REO Speedwagon and Starship.

Drew, a busboy at legendary rock club The Bourbon Lounge, meets fresh-off-the bus Sherrie and love hits like a double-shot of tequila. A real estate developer wants to tear down the club to make way for a strip mall. The club owners attempt to save their business by booking big-time rock star Stacee Jaxx.  Jaxx flashes his glam-glitter personality at Sherrie, and derails her romance with Drew – until the couple discover what’s important in life.

The show plays June 17-19 and 24-26, with 7 p.m. shows on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. shows on Sunday. Tickets are $30 for adults, $14 for students and $10 for children. You can get tickets in person at the McLeod Theater and SIU Arena box offices, by phone at 618/453-6000 or online at playhouse.siu.edu.
