WSIU to launch new mobile app on June 1

Public media fans across the region will enjoy a new way to connect to WSIU Public Broadcasting, when the stations launch WSIU Mobile, a free mobile app for Apple and Android devices. The app will be available for download from iTunes and Google Play on Wednesday, June 1.

“Viewers and listeners will be able to watch and listen to WSIU television and radio programs anywhere, anytime – at home or on the go,” WSIU Digital Services Manager Katrina Stackhouse, said. “The app is easy to use and will provide content public media fans want in an On-Demand format – from the latest new stories from WSIU Radio to favorite PBS & PBS KIDS programs.”

WSIU Mobile puts access to WSIU’s television and radio broadcast schedules at users’ fingertips, so they can access the full programming schedule and set up reminder notifications for their favorite shows. Parents will appreciate the parental control feature, which will provide kid-friendly access to PBS KIDS content and the option to block children from accessing the app’s news, video, and music content.

The new app also provides access to WSIU Radio’s HD1 and HD2 live streams. At the touch of a button, users will be able to pause, rewind, and forward content. They also will be able to listen to music or news while browsing the web or checking emails.

“This is a whole new way to access the most trusted media content from WSIU,” WSIU Executive Director, Greg Petrowich, said. “Everywhere you can take your smartphone or tablet, you can now take WSIU.”

Stackhouse said other features include an alarm clock to wake up with WSIU Radio, a search option to locate specific stories or segments, and the option to create bookmarks for live stories or On-Demand content. “The bookmarks are compatible with radiobookmark.com and users can share WSIU content by email or via social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter,” she said.
