Mindfulness Camp for Kids starts March 19

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale is sponsoring a Mindfulness Camp for Kids each Saturday morning from March 19 through May 7.

The Rehabilitation Institute’s community outreach event is for children ages 6 to 12. They will meet from 9 a.m. until noon each day for eight weeks at campus locations to be determined.

Mindfulness is a scientifically verified technique that can help children think better, focus more clearly on schoolwork and projects, help reduce anxiety and social fears, and increase their overall awareness. Children will learn breathing techniques, beginning yoga and explore the mind and environment around them. Each week they will participate in mindfulness activities and interact with their peers.

Participants should bring a small blanket, towel or yoga mat to each session along with their lunches. The cost is $95 and covers activities, materials and snacks.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 16. All campers must also submit a medical release form.

Additional information, along with the registration and release forms, is online at www.conferenceservices.siu.edu. Or, call SIU Conference and Scheduling Services office at 618/536-7751 to learn more.
