Alumni Association to award books, supplies Jan. 19
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Forty Southern Illinois University Carbondale students will receive more than $20,000 worth of textbooks and supplies for the 2016 spring semester from the SIU Alumni Association during a Jan. 19 ceremony at the Student Center.
The Association will host these students and the deans from their respective colleges for a brief awards presentation at 5 p.m. in Ballroom D. The Textbook Scholarship Awards Ceremony has become an annual tradition of the Association, with hundreds of students receiving this financial assistance since 2008.
“The SIU Alumni Association is proud to present these awards again this year,” Executive Director Michelle Suarez said. “Thanks to our members, who support our programs and activities through their membership dues, these students, like many before them, will have a huge expense lifted off them as they continue their education at SIU.”
To receive the award, students must demonstrate a financial need and have a GPA of at least 3.0. The scholarships are just one way the Association helps the campus community, connecting alumni and current students.
Each student who receives a scholarship will make brief comments during the ceremony and will be photographed with their college dean or representative. A reception, featuring light refreshments, will follow the program.
