Backpacking trip open to students, community

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center and Recreational Sports and Services are partnering to sponsor a winter break backpacking trip to Big Bend National Park and everyone is welcome to participate. 

The Outdoor Adventure Program takes place Jan. 9-17 at Big Bend National Park in Texas and the cost is all-inclusive.  The $450 registration fee covers travel, food, lodging and gear. 

The trip is open to SIU students and community members, whether they are beginners or experienced backpackers. Participants will enjoy the natural beauty of the region during an adventure incorporating teamwork, outdoor skills development and opportunities for personal growth and environmental education. The activity is adjusted for varying skill levels. 

An informational meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the SIU Student Recreation Center. Those participating in the trip aren’t required to attend but everyone who wants additional details will find the meeting informative.
