Media Advisory – Solar Observatory Design Project

Ahead of the total solar eclipse in August 2017, the first over the mainland United States since 1979, 11 third-year architecture students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will present conceptual designs for an astronomy observatory next week.

The presentations are from 1:15 to 4:15 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, in the gallery space on the first floor of Quigley Hall. The Architecture 351 class, under the direction of Chad Schwartz, an assistant professor in the School of Architecture, has been working with the Department of Physics to create the conceptual designs.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the presentations. For more information on the design project, contact Schwartz at 453-3734 or chad.schwartz@siu.edu. For information on the eclipse and the observatory plans, contact Bob Baer, specialist, at 453-2729 or rbaer@physics.siu.edu

In addition to the Aug. 21, 2017, event, where the university is the closest campus to the point of the eclipse’s greatest duration, there will be another total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. More information is available on the eclipse website (eclipse.siu.edu
