‘Workout of the Day with Warriors’ set for Nov. 11

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill.  – A special event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Recreational Sports and Services will recognize veterans in a unique way on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Workout of the Day (WOD) with Warriors is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the East (large) Gymnasium at the Student Recreation Center at 300 E. Grand Ave. on the SIU campus. The free event is open to the general public as well as to students and Student Recreation Center members.

Students and members will swipe their SIU ID cards or center membership cards for admission to the building and event while non-members will receive a wristband signifying their participation in the WOD with Warriors Event. The group workout utilizes an 11-based repetition theme, in recognition of the World War I Armistice Day of 1918, since renamed Veterans Day, which occurs on the 11th day of the 11th month.

SIU’s Recreational Sports and Services and Veterans Services Office are partnering with the Marion Chapter of Team RWB (Red, White and Blue) to sponsor the event. Team RWB, www.teamrwb.org, is a non-profit organization created to enrich the lives of veterans by connecting them with one another and their communities through physical and social activity.

Organizers say WOD with Warriors is a respectful, reflective fitness event mirroring similar events across the country. People can register online in advance at www.teamrwb.org/get-involved/wodwithwarriors. Participants may attend that day without pre-registering as well.
