Newspapers, social media topic of talk

A symposium Thursday, Oct. 29, in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts will examine the relationship of community newspapers and social media.

The symposium is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Communications Building Studio A, Room 1046. Those interested in attending should RSVP by calling 618/453-3262 or email Sherida Evans at sherida@siu.edu before Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The SIU School of Journalism and the Southern Illinois Editorial Association (SIEA) are event sponsors.

Lonnie J. Hinton, SIEA president and publisher of the Vienna Times, and Dafna Lemish, dean of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, will present welcome remarks, followed by guest speaker, Dennis DeRossett, director of the Illinois Press Association.

The panel discussion is from 10:45 a.m. to noon. Panelists are Jeff Long, editor, Effingham Daily News; Autumn Phillips, editor, The Southern Illinoisan; Elaine Vydra, digital marketing manager, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Lindsay Vaughn, Reppert Publications, and William Freivogel, professor, SIU School of Journalism.

There will be a job fair for students to meet publishers from 1 to 2 p.m.
