Media Advisory – School of Law Pro Bono Activities

Reporters, news crews and photographers are welcome to cover the SIU School of Law’s second American Bar Association/Equal Justice Works Pro Bono Week, Monday, Oct. 26, through Friday, Oct. 30. 

The law school, recognized for its commitment to serve the public good, was the first law school in Illinois to create a pro bono requirement for its students. Students are required to complete 35 hours of approved pro bono work prior to graduation, with the work law-related, uncompensated, supervised by an attorney, and not for academic credit. Next week, there will be two orientation sessions about the requirement, at 12:30 p.m., Monday and Thursday, in the law school courtroom. 

At 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Michael Fiello from the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance will discuss the need for pro bono services in a session titled, “Why Pro Bono?” There will also be table sessions in the formal lounge featuring employers and service providers with pro bono opportunities for which students can volunteer.
