‘Start Seeing Pink’ supports breast cancer fund

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be awash in pink in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“Start Seeing Pink” features numerous special activities and promotions.  Proceeds of the special events and Saluki “pink” sales will go to the Saluki Strength Breast Cancer Fund. The fund provides scholarships and other assistance for SIU students affected by breast cancer.

The online Saluki Pink apparel store is open now. Anyone may order a variety of clothing items through the Silkworm store and all proceeds go to the Saluki Strength Breast Cancer Scholarship. Order online and pick up items at the Student Center. All pre-orders made by Sept. 30 will be available for pickup by Oct. 5 so purchasers can have the apparel for most of the month’s activities. Those who place orders between Oct. 1 and the final deadline of Oct. 16 will receive their items later in the month.

The popular Big Pink Volleyball is back in 2015 at 5 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Student Recreation Center. This is just what it sounds like -- a fun volleyball game played with a giant pink ball.

The Art with a Heart quarter auction, set for 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the Student Center, is a new event for this year’s Start Seeing Pink. Organizers are now collecting donations of local art, gift cards and other great prizes. Additional contributions are welcomed.

Purchase Art with a Heart quarter auction tickets for $5 each in advance by calling Stephanie Odle at 618/993-1470 or Beth Alongi at 618/453-7103. If seating is still available, tickets will also be sold at the door.

The night of the event, the doors open at 6 p.m. and participants can play in two ways. Bring a couple of rolls of quarters and join in the action. Each of the prizes will be available for a “bid” of just a few quarters and all who raise their bidding paddles have a chance to win. And, you can pay $25 that night for an “all-in” paddle and you will be eligible to win any of the prizes that comes up for bidding as well as having chances to win by virtue of the bidding paddle and your quarters.

If it all sounds a bit confusing, not to worry. Everyone will get the complete instructions that night and it’s really quite simple to play. And, proceeds go to the SIU Saluki Strength Breast Cancer Scholarship.

Also, you can make a $1 donation at the Student Center, Student Recreation Center or Morris Library anytime in October and write on a pink ribbon your name or the name of someone you care about who has had breast cancer.

A giant human pink ribbon will form at 11:50 a.m. on Oct. 21 on the lawn of Morris Library. One and all are invited to don pink attire and come be part of a massive living pink ribbon. A university photographer will document the breast cancer awareness event.

In addition, a variety of other events are planned across campus. Visit www.studentcenter.siu.edu/pink for the complete schedule and additional details, information about the scholarship and previous winners, online donation forms and photos from the inaugural event in 2014.
