Aug. 21 – Sept. 11

This bi-weekly email brings together the highlights of arts and cultural events happening at SIU Carbondale. From music to art, film to dance, guest lectures to workshops and theater, you will find the information here. Event information is subject to change.

HIGHLIGHTS

The 2015-2016 academic year at SIU officially begins with the New Student Convocation. Faculty, staff and their families are invited to welcome the newest Salukis to campus at New Student Convocation, Friday, Aug. 21, at Saluki Stadium. The convocation, featuring President Randy Dunn and other university officials, begins at 6 p.m. The annual new student photo will take place immediately after convocation, followed by a variety of events for new students and parents.

Check out other events during SIU’s Weeks of Welcome here. If you are a fan of the Cardboard Boat Regatta, check out what might be one of the better photo opportunities during these events – the Cardboard Fort Building Contest, 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Quigley Hall courtyard. Students can make something creative with move-in boxes, as individuals or as a team. The American Institute of Architects Illinois sponsors this event.

You already know about Carbondale’s unique situation as the Eclipse Crossroads of America. Don’t let 2017 sneak up on you, get familiar with Neckers Observation Deck now. Astronomy observations take place throughout the year. The first one of the academic year is Sunday, Aug. 23, 9-10:30 p.m. Contact Bob Baer, 453-2729 or rbaer@physics.siu.edu.

Touch of Nature welcomes “The Gathering Place Off Broadway” and its special musical guests on Sept. 11, “A Salute to the Heroes of 9/11 Concert.” Johnny Cash tribute artist Bill Forness and One More Round will perform Cash hits from the early days through his last days.
