Media Advisory -- Move-In
Southern Illinois University Carbondale this week is welcoming new and returning students for the fall semester that begins on Monday, Aug. 24.
Here is basic information regarding move-in designed to assist reporters, photographers and news crews with their stories, photographs and video.
The official new student move-in dates for campus residence halls are Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21. On Thursday, about 1,000 new students who reside in a Living Learning Community or who have a 2-Year Edge Housing contract will move into University Housing residence halls. The following day, about 1,000 more new students will move in, followed by about 1,200 returning students who will move into their fall 2015 homes on Saturday. By the end of the weekend, 4,500 students – including resident assistants, student-athletes and others who moved in early -- will be living in SIU apartments and residence halls.
Typically, the move-in process begins at residence halls with students and their families dropping off the student’s belongings within designated areas near each residence hall. Someone remains with the items while the vehicle is parked and then volunteers help with the move-in. At the towers, located on the east side of campus, students will receive a number when they arrive to alleviate congestion. When the number is called, move-in volunteers will help students move their possessions into their rooms.
Nearly 1,000 volunteers from campus and the surrounding community have registered to help with move-in, the largest group on record. All students, their families and the registered volunteers (who will receive a complimentary meal ticket when they check in to help with move-in) can enjoy a free welcome lunch in the dining halls. Anyone else can join them for the meal by purchasing a guest meal ticket at the dining hall entrance for $9.25 plus tax.
Numerous special activities will welcome new and returning Salukis to campus, helping them start the semester off on the right note.
