Media Advisory – Final Summer 2015 Camps
With the addition of two extra summer camp sessions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, reporters, photographers and news crews will have even more opportunities to capture interesting activity stories, photographs and video during summer 2015.
Continuing Education and Outreach is coordinating the two new camp sessions set for July 27-31. Both camps will meet in Room 310 at Quigley Hall.
The LEGO MindStorms Camp is from 8:30 a.m. to noon for children ages 10 and older. Campers will create and command robots that walk, talk, think and do various tasks by utilizing the new LEGO MindStorms EV3 system. They will undertake missions as they issue commands by remote control or by downloading a free smart device app.
The new and final session of WeDo Robotics Camp is for children in grades 3-5 and will take place from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Participants will learn problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as they create wild animal models using LEGO Education hardware and software. The experience incorporates science, literature, math, social sciences, music, technology, physical education and various other components into a unique and fun learning experience. The camp also offers challenged creative time and the children will make a project to take home.
Jon Davey, professor of architecture and long-time director of SIU’s award-winning architecture-focused youth camps, will lead both camps. Media are welcome at any time during the camp hours. For more information, contact Davey at 618/453-3734 or by emailing jdavey@siu.edu.
