University goes smoke-free July 1

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale will become a smoke-free campus, in compliance with the Illinois Smoke Free Campus Act, effective July 1, 2015. 

The university will prohibit smoking on all campus property, including buildings, grounds, parking lots and university-owned or operated vehicles. Currently, university policy prohibits smoking within 15 feet of campus buildings. 

A campus and community committee chaired by Interim Dean of Students Katie Sermersheim is working to ensure the university’s compliance with the new state law. 

“SIU will become one of nearly 1,200 college and university campuses in the United States to adopt a 100-percent-smoke-free campus,” Sermersheim said.
