Global Media Research Center adds reading room

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Global Media Research Center will celebrate the opening of a new reading room in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts on Thursday, April 30.

The room will house a collection of texts and scholarly journals dedicated to the history, analysis and criticism of electronic media. The reception in the Dean’s Conference Room, room 1032, begins at 5 p.m.

The inaugural reception will honor the late Stuart Fischoff, a pioneer in the field of media psychology, and the addition of the “Stuart Fischoff Collection” to the reading room’s holdings.

Fischoff, of Carbondale, a well-known media psychologist, died in November 2014.

He was founding president of what is now The Society for Media Psychology and Technology, and was a senior editor of the Journal of Media Psychology. He was an emeritus professor of media psychology at California State University, Los Angeles, where he taught for 33 years. He started the first graduate program in media psychology and assisted in developing the first doctoral program in media psychology at the Fielding Graduate Institute.

The SIU Department of Theater and School of Music presented the inaugural Stuart Fischoff Excellence in Musical Theater Award in May 2014.
