This weekly email brings together all the arts and cultural events happening in a two-week period at SIU Carbondale. From music to art, film to dance, guest lectures to workshops and theater, you will find the information here. Event information is subject to change. This is the last Southern Illinois University Arts and Cultural Events email of the academic year. We will resume sending this email near the beginning of the fall 2015 semester. Watch your emails and SIU News for information about upcoming events throughout the summer.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Elyse Pineau is back, having come from retirement to serve as a visiting professor in the communication studies department. She’s been up to a whole lot, from teaching a University Honors Program special course to directing “The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse.”

Pineau based her performance on an adaptation of the novel of the same name by author Louise Erdrich. In the story, Father Damien Modeste has served the Ojibwe people for more than 50 years at the remote reservation Little No Horse. Nearing the end of life, Father Damien dreads the revelation death will surely bring – the priest is a woman, living as a man. Complicating things further, a colleague visits the reservation to track down information about a saint who may not be a saint.

Under Pineau’s direction, the performance highlights the mysteries of sainthood, the resilience of the Ojibwe people, and the malleability of gender and memory.

The show runs April 30-May 2, with performances beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7, with student tickets at $5. Tickets are available at the door before the performance, but with limited seating in the Marion Kleinau Theater, calling ahead to reserve a ticket is a good idea. Call 453-5618 to reserve tickets.
