Community listener program available

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Community Listener’s Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers people the opportunity to participate in a classroom learning experience, expanding their knowledge for a nominal cost without course credit or grades.

The program, illustrative of SIU’s commitment to lifelong learning and community service, is available through the university’s Continuing Education and Outreach. Participation is open to anyone not currently enrolled in a university-level course at SIU.

The registration fee is $50. The program also allows prospective students to check out a program and decide if it is an area of study they wish to pursue.

To join a class, those interested must obtain permission from the faculty member teaching a class in order to participate. There are a few limitations. For instance, community listeners can’t join a class that is already full.

The program runs Jan. 20 through May 15 and people may register now. The approval form is available online at www.continuinged.siu.edu

To sign up for the program, bring the completed form and $50 fee in person to the Continuing Education and Outreach office on the south end of the second floor of the Student Center no later than Jan. 20. Online and telephone registration are not available for this program.
