Veterans alumni group to host military reunion

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The SIU Alumni Association will soon be honoring Salukis who have, and continue to serve, in the United States military. The Saluki Veterans Alumni Group will host its inaugural military reunion on Nov. 14, in Marion.

The reunion, set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 147, 11720 Longstreet Road, will commemorate the service and success of military and veteran alumni and students. This is the first major event for the veterans alumni group, formally chartered by the Association’s National Board of Directors in April.

“We decided to host a military ball as a familiar, fun, and interactive way to bring current veteran students and veteran alumni together,” Ryan McKennedy, Saluki Veterans Alumni Group president, said. “The hope is to find alumni willing to assist current students through their college career by providing, internships, by becoming mentors, or even hiring our veteran students!

“We also want to give veterans who received their degree through the Extended Campus a reason to come to Southern Illinois University and enjoy interaction with other veterans and go to the football game the following day.”

The evening’s activities begin with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner, a formal program and then dancing. Attendees will receive a commemorative pint glass, sponsored by SIU Extended Campus. Current military students will be able to attend the reunion at a reduced price, courtesy of SIU Veterans Services. Attendees who are Association members or become members at the event will receive a challenge coin.

“Chartering the veterans group was an exciting moment for the Association, and this event will help honor all Salukis who serve our country,” Michelle Suarez, executive director of the SIU Alumni Association, said. “It also will be an excellent way for everyone to connect and celebrate the proud legacy of military veterans at this University.”
