College of Business ranks among the nation’s best

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Once again, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business earned national recognition as one of the country’s top business schools, according to The Princeton Review.

The college is included in the 2015 edition of “The Best 296 Business Schools.” While the publication does not rank the schools, SIU earned a spot on the top 60 list of the Best Business Schools in the Midwest.

“This recognition is confirmation that our commitment to maintaining the excellence required for our dual AACSB accreditation for our college and our School of Accountancy is the right course of action. I believe the key to our continuous improvement has been, and will continue to be, our faculty’s dedication to research, teaching and providing our students with the skills they need to succeed outside of our walls,” Jason Greene, interim dean of the College of Business, said. “Inclusion in this prestigious list is evidence that our enthusiasm for preparing our students for business is getting noticed.”

AACSB stands for Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, International, and only a small percentage of top business schools in the nation earn that distinction.

According to Robert Franek, senior vice president/publisher for Princeton Review, each of the schools on the list “offers outstanding academics.” Campus culture, the academic experience, prospects for career success, diversity and numerous other components play a part in the rankings.

SIU and the other schools each receive two-page profiles in the publication featuring information about academics, student life, admissions, tuition, student diversity and other factors of interest to students.

The Princeton Review established its list on the basis of 11 criteria, with 10 based primarily upon surveys of 21,600 students. Institutional data provides the rest of the information. Numerical scores are given on a number of factors including best classroom experience, best career prospects, best professors, most family friendly, best campus environment, best “green” MBA, best administered, greatest opportunity for minority students, greatest opportunity for women, most competitive students and toughest to get into.

The SIU profile incorporates quotes from students as well. Students praise the university and the business college for the “collegial atmosphere,” cultural diversity, beautiful location, research facilities, challenging curriculum, intellectual classroom discussions, affordable tuition, strong academic programs, responsive faculty and other positives.
