Museum offers ‘Completely Free’ workshops

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Area children who participate in the “Completely Free” workshops in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s University Museum know museums are not always places where whispering and solemnity are the rule. During these workshops, the museum is more like a visual playground.

The workshops are from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on select Saturdays this fall. The workshops, in the museum in Faner Hall, use museum exhibits as a starting point for art creation projects. The workshops are primarily for children 7-13 years old.

Here is the schedule for this fall:

Saturday, Oct. 18 -- Musical Inventions: Jean Tinguely’s sculptures make metal music. Participants will observe Tinguely’s sculptures and others, and make their own sound sculptures.

Oct. 25 -- Designosaurus!: Children check out product designs from the past and compare them with modern designs. Using a mix of artistic media, participants will create their own product designs.

Nov. 8 -- Artists Trading Cards IV: This popular program involves making trading cards to trade or give as gifts.

These programs are free but pre-registration is required. For more information or to pre-register, call the museum office at 618/453-5388 or visit museum.siu.edu/resources/workshops.
