Reporters, photographers and news crews can cover the various workshops associated with the annual “Expanding Your Horizons” conference, which begins at 9:15 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. at locations including the Student Center. For more information, call 618/453-5302.

Workshop areas include careers in aviation, DNA analysis, lasers and photonics, making lip gloss and building a mobile app, using graphing calculators and creating art using geometry.  More workshops are being added and a current list is available at math.siu.edu/eyh/workshops

The program’s aim is increasing the students’ awareness of career opportunities and connecting them with female role models who are in science-related careers. More than 30 SIU Carbondale faculty, nearby community colleges and private companies are volunteering their time for the event. Officials anticipate the workshop will attract between 150 and 200 students from throughout the region.

In addition to the student workshops, there will be concurrent workshops for parents, teachers and counselors to assist them in guiding girls in career choices.

Registration is $17 per student, which includes lunch. The deadline is Oct. 24. Registration is available by mail or online. Additional information is available at math.siu.edu/eyh, by email at eyhmath@siu.edu or 618/453-5302.
