Event to focus on women’s health, physical activity

CARBONDALE, Ill.  -- Women and girls from throughout the region are welcome at the third annual “WIN for Life!” at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Recreation Center on Nov. 1.  

The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon in the center’s small gym, with on-site registration starting at 8:15 a.m. The event is sponsored by Women’s Intersport Network (WIN) for Southern Illinois, a non-profit organization co-founded by Bobbi Knapp, kinesiology assistant professor, to educate and empower girls and women throughout the region through sports and physical activity in an encouraging environment. 

On-site registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the event runs from 9 a.m. to noon in the small gym.  Participants will enjoy a wide variety of sports and physical activities. Planned sessions include fitness assessments, a climbing wall, country line dancing, golf, hip hop dancing, jump roping, lacrosse, seated aerobics, self-defense, soccer, Tai Chi, weight training, yoga and Zumba. 

Faculty in the Department of Kinesiology along with present and former kinesiology graduate students will lead many of the sessions.  

Registration is $10 per person, or $25 for families with up to four members. Groups of 10 or more pay just $5 per person when registering as a group. Pre-registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 20. Participants may also register at the event as well. 

All ages are welcome, but girls under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult, and those under 18 must have a liability waiver signed by a parent or guardian prior to participating.
