Institute program to focus on politics, candidates
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A new Paul Simon Public Policy Institute program that starts Thursday, Aug. 28, and meets throughout the fall at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will focus on current political events.
The first of four “Caffeine and Candidates: Politics, Coffee and Conversation,” is set for 2:30 p.m., Thursday, at the institute, 1231 Lincoln Drive, in the old U.S. Forestry Building. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
David Yepsen, institute director, will moderate the first discussion, which will include other institute staff. The sessions are for people want to discuss politics and state and federal campaigns, Yepsen said.
“I just hope we can share some thoughts and insights and political knowledge with each other,” Yepsen said. “This fall there will be several races of local interest, including Illinois governor, the 12th Congressional District, the 115th district state representative race and whether Republicans will take control of the U.S. Senate. This will also be a chance to talk about the early stirring in the 2016 race for president.”
Other scheduled programs, with institute staff moderators are:
- 9 a.m., Sept. 10 – John S. Jackson, visiting institute professor.
- Noon, Oct. 6 – Linda Baker, institute and university professor.
- 2:30 p.m., Oct. 29 – Charles Leonard, institute visiting professor.
