Media Advisory – Region 8 Science Fair

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the annual Illinois Junior Academy of Science Region 8 Science Fair at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Tuesday, March 25, in the Student Center ballrooms.

Approximately 400 Southern Illinois students in 7th to 12th grade will participate, and more than 150 SIU Carbondale faculty and graduate students will volunteer to serve as judges during the event. Judging is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and public viewing of the projects is from 1 to 4 p.m.  Organizers will present awards beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.

The event includes 18 project categories, ranging from aerospace to behavioral science, health and zoology. Many academic departments and campus units also sponsor student and school awards totaling several thousand dollars.

Judges will select 54 projects to advance and compete in the state competition at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on May 2.

SIU Carbondale will host the state competition for the first time in 2015, as approximately 1,500 students will bring 1,000 projects to campus.
