Renee Rosnes Jazz Quartet to perform

by Vincent Rhomberg

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music will present the Renee Rosnes Jazz Quartet in concert at Shryock Auditorium on March 22.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.  Rosnes is a jazz pianist and composer.  Her quartet includes Steve Nelson on vibraphone, Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums.

Rosnes said the audience can expect a varied program, with both new and older original compositions, classic material from jazz masters such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, and original arrangements of songs from the American Popular Songbook.

“To be able to offer an artist of this caliber is just an extraordinary opportunity for our students and our community,” Philip Brown, professor of jazz studies, said.  “It reflects the ongoing commitment of the university to promote greatness in the region.”

Rosnes has a series of 12 albums to her credit, four of which have garnered Juno Awards.  Other awards include Composer of the Year, awarded by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.

Tickets are free for SIU students with valid student identification. General admission tickets are $12 apiece for adults and $6 each for non-SIU students. Tickets are available by phone at 618/453-6000, at southernticketsonline.com, or in person from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the McLeod Theater Box Office. Tickets will also be available one hour before the performance at Shryock Auditorium. The Student Fine Arts Activity Fee provides funding for the concert.
