Media Advisory -- Deer and Turkey Hunt
Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center is partnering with the National Wild Turkey Federation to host a special deer and archery hunt for people with disabilities, Friday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Dec. 15.
Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the hunt at Touch of Nature, located about eight miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road. The event will give people with varying disabilities the opportunity to hunt turkey or deer. Every hunter will have a partner to assist with whatever needs they may have but the hunts are in compliance with state and federal hunting guidelines. Organizers expect about one dozen people from around the state and surrounding area will participate.
Touch of Nature officials said they are unaware of any other archery deer hunt camps for individuals with disabilities. Hunting will take place during the times deer and turkey are typically on the move and hunters will be available for interviews at the camp when not hunting. The best times to speak with participants are Friday evening and late morning to early afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.
