Speaker to discuss death in popular culture

Kevin O’Neill, fellow in philosophy at the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies and professor of philosophy at the University of Redlands, will present two lectures at SIU next week. He will present “Virtual Immortality: Life after death in the age of social media,” at 6 p.m. Oct. 24, and “Impossible death: Post-modern mortality in Derrida, Foucault and Bataille” at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25. Both presentations will take place in Faner Hall 3059. The Oct. 24 event will be preceded by a 5 p.m. reception. O’Neill’s work is of to those working on topics related to death and the afterlife in popular culture, death and philosophy, American philosophy, pragmatism and neo-pragmatism, post-modernism and interdisciplinary humanities. He was the keynote speaker at The Association for Death Education and Counseling national conference this year.
