‘Freedom Winds’ concert set for Morris Library

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Freedom Winds, a U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America ensemble, will present a free concert at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Morris Library on Sept. 17.

The 10 a.m. concert in the library’s first floor rotunda is open to the public.  The woodwind quintet’s repertoire includes contemporary top-40 songs, well-known marches, classics and patriotic favorites.

The School of Music and Morris Library are performance sponsors.

The Freedom Winds and other band ensembles are part of the U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America, stationed at Scott Air Force Base near Belleville. The band performs throughout a 10-state region from Oklahoma to Michigan.

The concert will also launch the library’s new musical performance series that starts in October. “First Fridays Music at Morris” will bring a variety of SIU student vocal and instrumental concerts to the library the first Friday of each month at noon.  All of the concerts will be free and open to the public.  The School of Music and The Friends of Morris Library are series sponsors.
