Saluki Startup, Week of Welcome events set

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- An assortment of fun activities and tradition await new and returning Southern Illinois University Carbondale students when they arrive on campus for the upcoming semester.

Set for Aug. 15-18, Saluki Startup will include the New Student Convocation, Southern Social, and Saluki Pride Pep Rally.  Saluki Startup compliments the New Student Orientation experience, and provides a way for students and their families to again acquaint themselves with the University and gives students ideas for becoming actively involved with numerous opportunities on campus.

Fall semester classes begin Aug. 19. New students begin to arrive in Carbondale on Aug. 15, with move-in beginning at 7 a.m.

Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to cover the numerous events during Saluki Startup and Week of Welcome. Events that might be of particular interest include new student move-in on from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, with residence hall move-in for returning students Aug. 17; the Chancellor’s New Student Convocation, 5 p.m., Aug. 16, Saluki Stadium, followed by a Southern Social and Saluki Pride Pep Rally from 6 to 8 p.m., also at the stadium. The Week of Welcome, which runs Aug. 18-24, offers students opportunities to know their University better. Events include tours of classrooms and Morris Library, along with information fairs and numerous events that focus on topics including commuter awareness, student organizations, student wellness programs, sports and social clubs.

Chancellor Rita Cheng will host her third annual New Student Convocation from 5 to 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, at Saluki Stadium.  Required for all new students, the chancellor will elaborate on the University’s focus on student success, scholarship, citizenship, diversity and leadership.  Family members are welcome and encouraged to attend.  A Southern Social and Saluki Pride Pep Rally, also at the stadium, follows from 6 to 8 p.m.

Other events include:

  • Aug. 17 -- 8 p.m. to midnight, Student Center. Dawg’s Nite Out, an annual event that offers fun and numerous activities.
  • Aug. 18 -- 2 to 3:30 p.m., Old Main Mall. Watermelon Fest with the Chancellor.
  • Aug. 22 -- 6:30 p.m., Saluki Stadium.  Saluki Football Fan Fest.  Visit the stadium, walk out on the field and meet 2013 Saluki football players.  The event is free for all fans and features free player autographs, schedule posters and other activities.
  • Aug. 23 -- 8 p.m. to midnight. SIU Arena Parking Lot. SIU and Carbondale Kickoff Concert, featuring Chicago-based rapcore group, “ANIMAL.” Local stores, businesses and restaurants will be on hand to provide goodies.
