Craft Shop offers workshops for adults, children

by Tiana Russell

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Student Center Craft Shop at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has a wide variety of activities planned for children and adults this summer.

Adults can choose from an array of workshops and open craft sessions where they can enjoy making wine bottle items, wood working, and creating stained glass stepping stones, fused glass, glass beads, ceramics, stamped spoon garden markers and much more.  It is a great chance to learn new techniques or skills while being creative and exploring the many possibilities at the Craft Shop.

One of the popular activities is the hydroponic planter class. There will be two sections of this class, one in late June and one in July. Participants will be able to make their own hydroponic planter using a wine bottle.  Bring your favorite wine bottles and learn how to cut and set them up for hydroponic growing.  The grow media is included in the cost, which is $10; $7 for SIU students.  The class will have a minimum of three and maximum of 10 participants.

Each workshop has a minimum and maximum enrollment level, so early registration is encouraged to make sure you get a spot in the classes of your choice.  Costs of the sessions vary as do the age requirements and other details.  Some workshops require additional materials.

The Craft Shop welcomes walk-ins and also offers private lessons for those who learn better with individual instruction. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the summer months.
