Non-traditional students to hold barbecue June 15

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The second annual Kickoff to Summer BBQ, set for June 15, is a time for Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and families to gather for food, games and fun.

The event is set for 5-7 p.m. at Evergreen Park, just south of the SIU campus, off Pleasant Hill Road.  Participants can enjoy free food, volleyball and special activities.  There will also be games for children.

“This is the second year for the Kickoff to Summer BBQ and we intend for this to become an annual summer tradition.  Many of SIU’s non-traditional students remain in the area over the summer so it’s a great way to stay connected.  Last year we had nearly 80 in attendance, including undergraduate and graduate students and their partners and children.  Some are from campus but others live off-campus or are commuters.  It’s a great time for everyone to just relax and have some fun,” Deborah Barnett, coordinator of SIU’s Non-Traditional Student Services, said.

Non-traditional Student Services is collaborating with University Housing, Recreational Sports and Services and Student Support Services to sponsor the event.  There is no cost to attend but organizers request that those planning to attend sign up at nontrad.siu.edu/stayingconnected so they can properly plan food and activities.
