Popular summer architecture camp dates set
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Campers come to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s architecture camps from all over the world to not only learn about buildings and design, but also build friendships.
Registration is open for architecture camps for youths in grades 4-12. The 2013 camps feature weeklong sessions of the ever-popular Kid Architecture Camp, Middle School Architecture Camp and High School Architecture Camps. Continuing Education and Outreach along with the School of Architecture is again offering the camps.
Participants will develop an understanding of why many buildings look the way they do, what architects and interior designers do, how a building is designed, constructed, used and reused, and much more. Activities will include taking historic architecture field trips to St. Louis and other locales, sketching and rendering, visiting construction sites, casting concrete, model building, computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD). Fun, age-appropriate learning activities fill each camp session.
Kid Architecture will be June 17-21. Registration is $180 and includes quality instruction, all lunches Monday-Friday, supplies, materials, field trip transportation, limited accident medical insurance and a T-shirt.
Middle School Architecture Camp, for students in grades 7-9, is set for July 14-19, while High School Architecture Camp, for teens in grades 9-12, is July 21- 26. Registration for each of these camps is $360 for commuters or $510 for residential campers. The camps typically fill very quickly and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is encouraged.
The $510 resident fee includes quality instruction, all dinners (Sunday-Thursday), lunches (Monday-Friday), breakfasts (Monday-Friday), five nights lodging in an air-conditioned SIU Carbondale residence hall (Sunday-Thursday), educational supplies and materials, transportation for the field trips, limited accident medical insurance coverage and a camp T-shirt. The $360 commuter fee includes the same things, with the exception of breakfasts and lodging.
Jon Davey, architecture professor and project director for the architecture camps, is in his 31st year of design teaching. Davey has earned department Teacher of the Year honors five times, college Teacher of the Year twice, the Distinguished Faculty Award twice and the college Scholar of the Year award.
He has a special interest in young people’s ideas of design, and particularly in their development of three-dimensional spatial skills.
