Media Advisory – Doghouse Sustainability

When someone suggests “sustainability is for the Dawgs,” students in the Professional Construction Management (PCM) specialization at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will agree.

Results of a semester-long collaboration involving eight students in the University’s Technical Resource Management program and local business owners will be on display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at Murdale True Value & Just Ask Rental, 1915 W. Main St., Carbondale.  The project included construction of eight sustainable doghouses, each built with recyclable materials and following sustainability guidelines and Leadership in Energy and Energy Design (LEED).

The students teamed up with local business owners and architects to utilize their project management skills.  That included making project schedules and budgets, determining and acquiring materials, and meeting with the owners and architects. The students had to manage as if they were professional construction managers -- overseeing a project from inception to completion, said J. Kevin Roth, an assistant professor in the Technical Resource Management program.

Organizers suggest that the best time for interviews will be between 9 a.m. and noon.  For more information, contact Roth at 618/453-7219 or by email at jkroth@siu.edu.
