Conference will showcase women’s research

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s inaugural Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Conference will showcase the research of University students and faculty through a variety of presentations.

The conference is set for April 5 in the Ohio and Mississippi rooms in the Student Center.  The morning session is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session is from 1 to 5 p.m.  The event is free and open to the campus community and the public.  Participants do not need to pre-register.

The sessions will cover a wide variety of topics including gender and sexuality in the media, women’s roles on campus and in the community, representations of women in film and fiction, women’s health, masculinities studies, gender, feminism and pedagogy, and much more.

The conference also includes a book sale featuring used fiction and non-fiction books with a focus on women, gender and sexuality issues.  The book sale takes place throughout the day in the International Lounge.

Refreshments will be available before the morning session, and a reception at 5 p.m. will wrap up the conference.  Both will be in the International Lounge. 

The conference sponsors include the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program and the Higher Education Student Association, a campus registered student organization.
