Media Advisory – SIU, Grey Dawg in Metropolis

Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Grey Dawg, the playful Saluki mascot who appears at athletic and other SIU events, will visit two grade schools in Metropolis on Wednesday, March 27.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to come along on the journey as Grey Dawg and SIU Admissions Coordinator Rachel Harvel visit the classrooms.  The day starts at 9 a.m. with a visit to the third-grade class at Jefferson Elementary School, 4915 Jefferson School Road.  At 10 a.m., Grey Dawg and Harvel will visit the sixth-grade class at Franklin Elementary School, 1006 Mt. Mission Road.

Harvel and Grey Dawg are helping both schools promote their “No Excuses University” campaign.  These classes chose SIU Carbondale as their college of interest.  The campaign focus is encouraging students in kindergarten through sixth-grade to include a college education in their plans when they think about their futures.  Harvel will talk with students about SIU and the benefits of higher education.

School officials do ask that visitors check in with the school office upon arrival.
