by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students have the opportunity to show their creativity and also have their work become a permanent display on campus.

Any University student may enter the 35th annual Purchase Awards competition by dropping off up to two entries between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., April 8, in Student Center Ballroom D.  Ceramics, paintings and all types of original media are welcome.

A committee of faculty and staff will judge the submissions that afternoon and select those that will become part of the 2013 Purchase Awards display.  Those selected pieces will be available for public viewing in the Art Alley, located on the second floor of the Student Center, through May 6.

The Purchase Awards reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m., April 18, in Art Alley.  An announcement at 5:30 p.m. will reveal the one or two pieces of artwork the Student Center will purchase for permanent display in its art collection.  Students who created other featured pieces not chosen will receive certificates.

Entries not selected for the initial display will be available for pick-up from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on April 8.

Student Programming Council (SPC) Visual Arts and the Student Center are sponsoring the Purchase Awards.  For more information, call 618/536-3393, visit the webpage at www.spc.rso.siu.edu or check out the SPC Facebook page at www.facebook.com/spc.siu
