Fundraiser planned for ‘Girls Make Movies’ camp

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A fundraiser for the annual “Girls Make Movies” camp will feature works by female filmmakers and other media professionals associated with Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The fundraiser and benefit screening will begin at 7 p.m., April 13, in the Communications Building soundstage, room 1116.  The suggested donation is $10 for adults; $5 for SIU Carbondale students with student identification.  There will also be an auction, and the admission price includes refreshments.

Organizers are collecting film, video and media made by female filmmakers associated with SIU Carbondale for the screening and auction.  The submission deadline for films is Friday, March 15.   Film submissions should go to Angela Aguayo, assistant professor in the Department of Cinema and Photography at ajaguayo@siu.edu.

Last year’s event raised more than $1,300 for the camp, said Clare Mitchell, assistant dean of student affairs in MCMA.

This year’s residential camp is June 23-28.  The $90 cost includes instruction, room and board, materials and activities.  Registration dates are still being determined. Please check the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts website mcma.siu.edu for up-to-date information on the registration process.

About 40 girls have participated in the first three years of the camp. The workshops offer participating high school students the opportunity to learn about filmmaking and enhance their skills with the assistance of female SIU Carbondale faculty, graduate students and undergraduate filmmakers.  The camp also highlights the opportunities available for women in the film and video industries.

The Illinois Broadcasters Association has generously agreed to fund both the Girls Make Movies and TV News Camp again this year, Mitchell said.
