Media Advisory -- Accounting Challenge

More than 275 high school and community college students from 18 schools will participate in the 15th annual Southern Illinois University Carbondale Accounting Challenge on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Student Recreation Center.  The School of Accountancy hosts the event.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the event, which incorporates academic and team-building components.

The academic portion begins the day and then from 10:30 a.m. to noon the participants will work in teams on a secret “challenge.”  Past competitions included using a few sheets of paper and masking tape to create a capsule that prevents a wood block pendulum hammer from smashing the fruit inside the capsule, and using minimal supplies to create a carton sturdy enough to protect an egg dropped from an upper balcony.

Winners of the free, dual competition are vying for bragging rights and the opportunity to win college scholarships for their efforts.  The awards ceremony is at 1 p.m.  Members of the media are welcome to attend the team competition and/or awards presentation.

For more information, contact Scott Polczynski at spolczynski@siu.edu or 618/314-3091 or Marcus Odom at modom@business.siu.edu or 618/453-1408.

Participants are also eligible for door prizes in the event that offers prospective Salukis both a unique set of challenges and the opportunity to learn more about SIU Carbondale.  The Accounting Circle, composed of alumni and friends of the College of Business’s accounting school, provide funding for the Accounting Challenge.
