Changes ahead for Group Fitness exercise classes
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Changes within Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Recreational Sports and Services beginning next month will provide better, more cost-effective service to its clients.
Beginning with the Spring 2013 semester, Recreational Sports and Services (RSS) will implement price variations for its Group Fitness classes. Some classes will still be available at no cost to students and members, but RSS will also offer a number of fee-based classes under a three-tier pricing system. Costs will range from $50 to $125 for the spring semester.
“The rationale for making this change is based on the fact that RSS is committed to not seeking an increase in student fees for next year. Therefore, It was determined that in order to maintain the quality and quantity of group exercise classes, a fee structure would need to be imposed to offset the cost of providing those services,” Sally Wright, associate director of programs, said.
RSS will offer 53 classes each week, including 19 Tier 1 classes, which are free to students and RSS members. Tier 2 covers 21 classes, including the popular Zumba dance fitness program and cycling sessions. The cost is $50, and those who have a Tier 2 pass can participate in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 classes for the entire semester. A Tier 3 pass provides access to 13 yoga, Pilates and mind-body type classes. The cost is $125 for the semester, and also covers participation in all Tier 1 and 2 classes.
The Group Fitness passes will go on sale beginning Dec. 17 at the Student Recreation Center’s Administrative Office. The center is also offering an opportunity to sample all of the classes in each of the tiers before you purchase a pass. SIU Carbondale students and people who have a Recreation Center pass can participate free in any of the classes Jan. 14-19, the first week of the spring 2013 semester. Passes will be required to join classes beginning Jan. 21, the start of the second week of spring semester classes.
The Group Fitness passes are in effect through May 11, which is spring 2013 commencement. People who do not want to buy a semester pass can pay $8 per class for a single admission pass to any Tier 2 or 3 class. Individuals who are not SIU Carbondale students or Student Recreation Center members may purchase a class single admission pass for $8, in addition to a $6 entry fee for the facility.
