Civic orchestra presents concert at Shryock

by Jordan Wren

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Civic Orchestra presents a concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Shryock Auditorium.

The Southern Illinois Civic Orchestra is a community ensemble comprised of SIU Carbondale students as well as community members of all ages.

Conductor Eric Lenz, assistant professor of cello at SIU, is very proud of the work the orchestra has accomplished this year.

“It is great working with talented musicians of such varied backgrounds coming together to present a high-quality artistic product,” Lenz said.

The program includes Beethoven’s “Overture to Fidelio,” taken from his only opera. It features contrasting sections in fast and slow tempos as well as horn and clarinet solos. The orchestra also performs selections from Danny Elfman's score to the film "Corpse Bride," which Lenz said brings charm and contrast to the program.

Other selections include the “Pavane” by Gabriel Fauré, which Lenz describes as “one of the most challenging and sophisticated pieces” to be programmed by the orchestra. It features solos in all the woodwind sections.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $6 for students. Tickets are available in advance from the ticket office in Shryock Auditorium or online at http://southernticketsonline.com
