by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- An assortment of special events and activities at SIU Carbondale will mark the upcoming National Adult Student Recognition Week.

The events run Nov. 2-11, and feature coffee sessions, a Military Appreciation Day, Veterans Day commemoration, and other activities. The focus of Adult Student Recognition Week is on non-traditional students and their goals.

The good times begin with a coffee gathering at the Center for International Education from 3-5 p.m., Nov. 2. A "Soups and Scholarships" presentation that begins at noon, Nov. 6, at the Student Center, will give non-traditional students an opportunity to learn more about searching for scholarships, while a round-robin discussion with professionals from offices both on- and off-campus on Nov. 9, will give students a chance to gain career advice.

Other activities include a viewing party from 6-10:30 p.m., Nov. 6 in Student Center Ballroom B to view presidential election results, and a "Thank You Thursday," from 12:30-2:30 p.m., Nov. 8, in the Faner Hall Breezeway. That event will allow students to write a quick note of thanks to SIU Carbondale faculty or staff who made a difference.

Non-Traditional Student Services/Single Parent Programs is collaborating with a number of other units and organizations on campus to present these events. Participating organizations include the Association of Non-Traditional Students, SIU Athletics, Financial Aid Office, Graduate and Family Services, Health Services, Recreational Sports and Services, SIU Veterans Center, the Student Center and Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
