Student Center events will offer ‘scary-good’ times
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Student Center is the spot to be for a number of special activities during the Halloween season.
Pumpkin Palooza, a pumpkin painting event, will take place on the south patio from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24. All materials will be provided, while supplies last, for University students to participate in this Student Programming Council Special Events activity. Halloween, on Oct. 31, will feature a costume contest, assorted craft activities and more fun. All University faculty, staff and students are welcome to participate in a costume contest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by the area of the first floor north escalators while in costume for a quick photo. Photos will be posted on the Student Center's Facebook page throughout the day for people to vote for their favorite costumes. The costumes must be identifiable, original and creative.
The top two costumes in the student and faculty/staff categories will receive prizes, which include tickets for special events at McLeod Theater and Shryock Auditorium, University Bookstore gift certificates, and coupons for free Bowling & Billiards, Craft Shop activities and McDonald's meals. All participants get free wax hands.
The Craft Shop will be open for assorted walk-in activities 1-8:30 p.m. Anyone may stop by and create wax hands for $4, receive a $2 face painting or henna tattoos, or even purchase a costume. There will be food and drink specials, discount evening bowling and more, primarily for those in costume. Check the website at www.studentcenter.siu.edu or call 618/453-7103 for details.
SPC Films is also sponsoring a special viewing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Nov. 2-3 in the Student Center’s Ballroom A. Tickets for the campy R-rated flick are $3 for SIU students or $4 for the general public. You can also buy prop bags for $3.
