Campus Safety Alert

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety is investigating a battery and robbery that occurred Tuesday, Oct. 9, on the sidewalk south of Anthony Hall.

The incident occurred at 11:40 p.m. and involved a 20-year-old SIU student. The student told police he was walking west over the north overpass when the robbery occurred on the sidewalk south of Anthony Hall. The suspect came running down the overpass and as he approached demanded the victim's "weed, money and wallet," police said. The victim told police he gave the suspect his wallet, and yelled for help as two other people walked by.

The suspect hit the victim in the face, ran east about 50 feet and dropped the wallet on the sidewalk.

The victim received minor injuries to his lip and nose, but did not require medical treatment.

The suspect is described as an African American male, about 6-feet, 1-inch tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans, black shoes, a white mask and black baseball cap.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the SIU Carbondale Department of Public Safety at 618/453-3771 or the Crime Stopper Line at 618/549-COPS.

Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and if traveling at night to use the Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit Service and Brightway Path. In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
