‘Let the Games Begin!’ is Homecoming 2012 theme

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- It’s once again time to rekindle the fun, memories and excitement as Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s  Homecoming 2012 celebration, “Let the Games Begin!,” kicks off later this week.

The excitement and pageantry that comes with Saluki Homecomings start Wednesday, Oct. 10 and run through Saturday, Oct. 13.

The festivities include a kickoff event, blood drive, Southern Illinois University Press sidewalk sale, movie, dental hygiene seminar, Legacy Preview, Distinguished Alumni induction ceremony, and special reunions for various University groups.  There’s also the annual Homecoming Stepshow, Homecoming parade, Alumni tailgate, the 41st Annual Miss Eboness Pageant, and of course, the big football game at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Salukis hosting Northern Iowa.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. in Carbondale.  Connie Price-Smith, a four-time Olympian and heavily decorated Saluki track and field athlete, is the 2012 Grand Marshal. Also a basketball standout while in college, Price-Smith is a 1990 SIU Hall of Fame inductee, and head coach of the Saluki men’s and women’s track programs.

Voting is under way for the annual Homecoming King and Queen selections this week.  The court includes:

            •  Queen candidates are seniors Whitney Clark, a radio-television-media industries major from Chicago; Emma Dale, a radiologic sciences major from Walnut; Heidi Myszka, a dental hygiene major from Bloomington; Chelsea Reardon, a public relations major from Murphysboro, and Emma Will, an English education major from Marion.

            •  King candidates are Brett Bocian, a biomedical sciences major from Lake in the Hills; Corbin Wayne Doss, a  civil engineering major from Springfield; Steven Ebers, a biological sciences major from Cutler; Nathan Miranda, a criminology and criminal justice major from Olive Branch, Miss., and Brendon Tarvin, an accounting major from Wood River.  Tarvin is a junior, while the other king candidates are seniors.
