University names directors, coordinators
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale has filled several key leadership positions.
The University has new directors or coordinators for the Veterans Center, University Housing, Recreational Sports and Services, Touch of Nature Environmental Center, campus sustainability, and the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration.
They are:
- Michael A. Carter, Touch of Nature Environmental Center director.
- Wayne Glass, Office of Sponsored Projects Administration director.
- Roderick I. Santulan, Veterans Services coordinator.
- Kris Schachel, sustainability coordinator.
- Jon L. Shaffer, University Housing director.
- Troy L. Vaughn, Recreational Sports and Services director.
Carter will assume the director's position at Touch of Nature on Oct. 1, and bring more than 30 years of experience in conservation and recreation education administration. His most recent position was as tribal deputy manager for the 25,000-acre National Bison Range U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services/Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. He previously served as CEO for the Tucson Zoological Society, executive director of ZooMontana and Botanical Gardens In Billings, Mont., and in other positions in the field in Montana and Illinois. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in zoology at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Glass will join the University as director of the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration on Monday, Sept. 24. A certified research administrator, he is director of grants for Schoolcraft College and previously served in related roles at universities including Plattsburgh State University, the University of Southern Maine and Auburn University. He earned his MBA from Auburn University, and his bachelor's degree in natural sciences from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Santulan, Veterans Services coordinator since August, retired from a 20-year career with the U.S. Air Force as a major in November 2011, and since was an entrepreneur with BDC Products, Advisors and Solutions in Marion. A pilot, he completed his bachelor's degree in advanced technical studies at SIU Carbondale in 1995, and earned his commission as a second lieutenant through the University's Air Force ROTC program. He also holds a master's degree in security studies from Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., and is working on his MBA at SIU Carbondale.
Schachel, formerly the fellowship and scholarship coordinator for the College of Science, became sustainability coordinator in July. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in geography from SIU Carbondale, and she has completed all but her dissertation toward a doctorate in environmental resources and policy. Schachel has been involved in sustainability work for many years, including serving as executive director of Keep Carbondale Beautiful and working and volunteering with the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future, Inc.
Shaffer came to the University as housing director in September from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., where he had worked since 2000. At Ferris State, he initially was interim director and then supervisor of Student Judicial Services. He then served as associate director of Housing/director of Residential Programs and Services and since 2007 as director of Housing and Residence Life. He also previously served as assistant director of Residence Life at the University of Notre Dame. Shaffer holds a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Western Michigan University, a master's in student personal administration from James Madison University and a bachelor's degree in psychology/sociology from Northern Michigan University.
Vaughn, previously director of the Department of Recreation Services and adjunct instructor at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., began his duties as director of Recreational Sports and Services at the University earlier this month. Prior to assuming the directorship at SEMO in 2005, he was associate director of sports facilities management and recreation services, physical education instructor and assistant director of programming for Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He also has worked in other positions in the field within higher education. Vaughn completed his master's degree in recreational sports administration at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Franklin College in Franklin, Ind.
