Webinar features author, educator Tim Wise

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Office of Diversity and Equity will stream a live webinar next week that features one of the nation's leading anti-racism authors and educators.

Tim Wise, an anti-racist essayist, will focus his discussion on white privilege with "Race: Through the Lens of White Privilege." Wise will be in Michigan that day, but the University's Office of Diversity and Equity has the opportunity to stream this lecture live.

The webinar screening is at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 22, in the John C. Guyon Auditorium in Morris Library. Admission is free, and the public is invited.

Wise is the author of six books, including a memoir, "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son." An international lecturer and acclaimed writer on issues that include comparative racism, race and education, and racism and religion, Wise has spoken on more than 800 college and high school campuses. In 2010, Ute Reader magazine named Wise one of "25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World." Michael Eric Dyson, a best-selling author and university professor at Georgetown University, said Wise is "one of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation."

The Society for Diversity is another event sponsor.
