Student Center plans week of special events

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Student Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is kicking off the fall semester with a variety of special events.

There's something special every day, Aug. 20-25, as the Student Center welcomes students to campus.

Here's the schedule for the week:

Monday through Friday, Aug. 20-24

  • Poster sale, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., first floor's north escalator area.

  • $1 bowling, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Bowling and Billiards.

  • $1 henna tattoos, 4-8:30 p.m. at the Craft Shop.

  • Free bike repair, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saluki Spokes in the Craft Shop.

Students who sign up to rent space at the Craft Shop's woodshop this week will also get a special discount.

Tuesday, Aug. 21

  • Free cookout for students, 1-3 p.m., outside the east entrance, courtesy of Student Center Dining by Chartwells.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

  • Red Cross Blood Drive 2012, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Blimpie's seating area. Give the gift of life.

  • Panhellenic sorority recruitment for students, 5-7 p.m., Ballroom B. Check out the sororities on campus.

  • Coffee House Series featuring Jessica Jo Jolly, 7-9 p.m., south patio. Enjoy free coffee, desserts along with the sounds of this local Indie singer/songwriter.

Thursday, Aug. 23

  • Red Cross Blood Drive 2012, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Blimpie's seating area.

  • Free Dip & Dots for students, 2-3 p.m., outside the east entrance. Student Center Dining by Chartwells is providing the free ice cream treats.

  • RSO Fair, 5-7 p.m., Student Center Ballrooms. University students can learn about the more than 450 registered student organizations and the numerous community organizations to be involved in while at SIU Carbondale.

  • "Snow White and the Huntsman," free SPC film, 7 p.m., auditorium, courtesy of Student Programming Council.

Friday, Aug. 24

  • Panhellenic sorority recruitment for students, 4:30-10:30 p.m., Ballroom B.

  • Free SPC film: "Snow White and the Huntsman," 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. shows, auditorium.

Saturday, Aug. 25

  • SPC free film: "Snow White and the Huntsman," 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

  • National Pan-Hellenic Council Pandemonium, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Ballrooms C & D. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Iota Phi Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority (all are incorporated) are hosting this dance to welcome students back to SIU Carbondale.
