Two free movies kick off SPC's early fall schedule

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Action films and a new take on a popular fairy tale are part of the fall lineup at Southern Illinois University Carbondale courtesy of the Student Programming Council Films.

The early semester movie schedule features discount prices for a variety of popular films for the whole family. Tickets are $2 for SIU Carbondale students with their campus ID and children ages 10 and younger. The price for the general public is $3 per person. Children three and younger get in free but please don’t bring children to R-rated movies. Payment is by cash, and University students may also pay by Debit Dawg.

The series kicks off with two free movies for students in celebration of the University's "Dawgs Nite Out" and "Week of Welcome." All SPC Films are in the Student Center Auditorium.

Here's the early fall SPC Films schedule:

  • "Thor" -- Aug. 17, 9:30 p.m., 115 minutes, "Dawgs Nite Out" free movie night, rated PG-13. Warrior Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is banished to Earth from his planet Asgard and fights to reclaim his powers as he fends off those seeking to destroy him. Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins also star.

  • "Snow White and the Huntsman" -- Aug. 23-25 at 7 p.m., Aug. 24 and 25 also at 9:30 p.m., 127 minutes, rated PG-13. This is a "Week of Welcome" free film. Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, this movie takes the popular fairy tale to a whole new level.

  • "Avengers" -- Sept. 6-8 at 7 p.m., Sept. 7-8 also at 10 p.m., 143 minutes, rated PG-13. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard and Samuel L. Jackson star in this super hero fest.

  • "Madagascar 3" -- Sept. 13-15 at 7 p.m., Sept. 14-15 also at 9:30 p.m., 93 minutes, rated PG. Join a zany assortment of animated critters as they reinvent a traveling circus in their quest to get back to the Big Apple; voices courtesy of the likes of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith and Chris Rock.

  • "Brave" -- Sept. 20-22 at 7 p.m., Sept. 21-22 also at 9:30 p.m., 100 minutes, rated PG. The unusual Princess Merida uses her archery skills and bravery to undo a curse on her kingdom in this animated tale with voices by Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and others.

  • "The Amazing Spider Man," -- Sept. 27-29 at 7 p.m., also at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 28-29, 136 minutes, rated PG-13. It's Saluki Family Weekend and the whole family will enjoy this latest chapter in the Peter Parker/Spiderman saga, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.
